NT Lesson 11 – Makes a Dead Man Live

LESSON ELEVEN

JESUS MAKES A DEAD MAN LIVE

John 11:1-45

Jesus had three good friends in one family. Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary. One day Martha and Mary sent someone to tell Jesus that Lazarus was sick.  Martha and Mary thought Jesus would come to their home immediately and heal Lazarus. But Jesus stayed where he was for two more days.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “Let’s go to Lazarus’ home. Lazarus is dead. I am glad that he has already died, because I will show you something that will help you believe in me.”

Jesus and his disciples walked a long way to Lazarus’ home. When they got there, Lazarus had already been dead for four days. Martha and Mary came to meet Jesus.  They knew that Jesus was the Son of God. They said to Jesus, “We know you can heal people. If you had been here, Lazarus would not have died.”

Many of Lazarus’ friends came with the sisters and Jesus to Lazarus’ tomb. They were crying because Lazarus was dead.

The tomb was like a cave. Someone had wrapped Lazarus’ body in long strips of cloth and laid it in the tomb. Then someone had rolled a large stone over the door of the tomb.

Jesus said, “Take the stone away from the tomb.”

Martha said, “But if you take the stone away it will smell bad. The body has been in the tomb for four days.”

But Jesus told them to take the stone away anyway. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed to God the Father. “Father, thank you for hearing me. I know you always hear me, but I say this so that these people will believe that you sent me.” Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

Lazarus came out of the tomb. He was wrapped in strips of cloth from head to toe.

Jesus said, “Unwrap him and let him go.”

They took the strips of cloth off of Lazarus. He was alive and healthy. His family and friends were so glad to see Lazarus again.
