Old El Paso taco seasoning mix no longer claims to be gluten free on the label, yet they don't list wheat, barley, rye, or oats in their ingredients. My understanding is this: If a product from the US has wheat in it (except for meat) it must list wheat on the label, or any of the other top ten allergens. Since it doesn't list any of these ingredients, it is safe for people on gluten free diets to eat it. If it is like Australia or New Zealand, in order to claim the gluten free label they have to have every batch tested, so most manufacturers don't specify "gluten free" on their label even when it is perfectly safe to eat. I am told, however, that a very sensitive Celiac should choose products with the gluten free label. My husband is a Celiac, but he can eat products like this with no problem. If in doubt, check with your doctor or dietician.

Through a Google search (Old El Paso gluten free), I found your blog. I am trying to confirm that Old El Paso taco seasonings are gluten free. Can you tell me if they are? Any information you can provide will certainly be appreciated. Have a great day! Thanks, Denise

Hi again Deb, I am just looking into your gluten free recipes. I am a Clinical Nutritionist and have many clients who are not able to eat wheat and other high gluten products. I myself have had to follow this type diet since I was 19. So do my son and daughter. For us it effected our respiratory health. My husband did too, but he is over in Glory with the Lord, as of Oct 13th 2007. I miss him and am learning and sharing a lot about grief these days. Sincerely for Christ, Dr Dorie Erickson
