- There are many kinds of buttons:
Big, sturdy buttons: white jacket
old delicate buttons: buttons on antique doll dress
special and expensive: paua and mother of pearl necklace
shell buttons: made of special material with skill and precision
God made us each unique. Psalm 139:13-16
As God’s creation
- I’m not a DNA accident, a product of chance.
- I’m not a mistake.
- I am specially designed by God from the moment of conception.
- I was skilfully wrought in secret—God knit me together in the womb.
God planned out my life before I was born.
God loves me and wants to work in my life.
- Many varieties of buttons can be used in different ways:
Buttons are used for clothes, eyes for dolls or teddy bears, jewelry.
Some have a special purpose:
red bandana buttons: I covered them, made them special for my denim dress.
teddy bear buttons: mainly decorative
I am God’s workmanship, created for good works. Eph. 2:10
Am I fulfilling the purpose God created me for?
- Using my natural and spiritual gifts to serve God?
- Have I found what God wants me to do or am I trying to be someone I’m not?
- Am I fulfilling my role well? useful, diligent, working hard
Or am I just taking room in a button jar, serving no purpose?
- Some buttons have qualities that make them hard to use:
buttons for wedding jacket: nice to use once, but not washable, get scratched easily
teddy bear buttons: cute, but difficult to button
buttons that have lost their backs: can’t sew them on
buttons that are too nice to share and pass on: pearl, paua button
Is there something about me that makes me hard to use? 2 Timothy 2:20,21
Like dishes, some buttons serve their purpose better than others.
We need to be spiritually clean and ready to serve the Master well.
Do I have personality quirks that demand special treatment?
Do I have character flaws or sin in my life that I need to work on?
Am I dependable, flexible, willing to serve?
- Buttons usually have no function until they are sewed on or connected to something.
red bandana buttons: I hope to find a purpose for them someday, but now aren’t useful at all
If we’re going to be useful to God, we need to be connected to Christ.
Compared to others, we may look pretty good, but all fall short of his standard. Romans 3:23
God loved us so much he sent Jesus to die for us. Romans 5:8
When we receive Jesus as our Savior we become His children. John 1:12
In salvation we’re sewed tight to God in a way that can’t be cut off. John 10:27-29
God is so good to create us for a special purpose in life and give us what we need to fulfil that purpose.
